March 21, 2017
The Ancaster Horticultural Society holds its next meeting on Tuesday, March 21st, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The Society welcomes speaker, William Roman, General Manager of Rosewood Estates Winery, and his topic is: “Rosewood Estate Winery and the use of Apiary Mead to Make Wine”.
Mead, also known as Honey wine, is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water and sometimes with various fruits, spices and/or yeast & grain. Mead is most likely the oldest alcoholic beverage known to mankind and was considered by the Ancient Greeks & Romans to lengthen lifespan and to possess healing qualities. Honey-wine was consumed by many ancient civilizations from the poor to the very rich and often referred to as “the nectar of the Gods”
William Roman is a third generation family of beekeepers and a trained viticulturist and winemaker. He has a diverse and focused background. Studying Business at Hamilton’s McMaster University, William achieved a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and went on to complete the Viticulture and Oenology Program at Niagara College. With much experience working in vineyards and wineries in Ontario, British Columbia and New Zealand, William acquired a unique skill set of having both hands-on experience attending to the growing of vines and the winemaking process as well as the business operational side of running a winery and apiary. William’s mission is to show wine lovers, locally and abroad, that the Grape Growers of Ontario can produce elegant and dynamic world class wines. The family business practices and cultivates sustainable and natural beekeeping and vineyards, in hopes of achieving balanced vines and stronger hives, which are better able to tolerate pests, disease and seasonal climatic variations. William will be providing wine and honey samples at the meeting.
A coffee and tea social begins at 7:30pm followed by the meeting at 8:00pm.
