About the ACO Port Hope Garden Tour
According to the organizers, the ACO Port Hope Garden Tour gardens were chosen for their remarkable beauty, but also for the ways they differ from one another in size, age, style or purpose.
An 1860s home set on a large corner lot features original white pine, spruce, butternut, walnut and Norway spruce trees, as well as recent stone features. Further down Bramley Street, you will find a beautifully designed and maintained property across the street from the exuberant family garden belonging to one of Port Hope’s finest artists. A new formal garden, inspired by European principles, and an old estate property, featuring garden rooms with tennis court and pool, are fascinating and inspiring.
Toward the bottom of Dorset Street West, five gardens allow for leisurely strolling from property to property. On the south side are two identical but quite separate yards designed and gardened by the same couple, showing how the same space can be treated. On the north side are three neighbouring gardens, each of which includes a level street area and a substantial slope down to the lower sections. The last garden, just around the corner, features new and established plants and ideas. As the owner says, “The old gardens are embracing the new.”
