Annual vines are easy to grow and well-behaved, and most have intriguing blooms. My current favourite is Spanish flag vine, a.k.a. firecracker vine.

A visit to the Chelsea Physic Garden

The walled Chelsea Physic Garden in London is a peaceful place to spend an afternoon, regardless of your gardening inclinations.

Designed for a recently retired couple, this garden featured sunken areas filled with gold, maroon and silver plants. The sculpture comprised crushed, rusty tin cans (looks better in person.) Obviously, this imaginary couple has more discretionary time than most.
