Visiting the Garden Museum

By Beckie Fox Filed Under: England

Knot garden at the Garden Museum in Lambeth
Knot garden at the Garden Museum in Lambeth

Our first stop is a small museum, established in 1980, that speaks to the garden nerd. The Garden Museum, located in the former church of St. Mary at Lambeth in London, celebrates the art, design and history of gardens.

Currently, there’s a special exhibit of the life and work of Russell Page, the first public show of his archive. Favourite quotation: “Rules are good servants but not always good masters.”

Display cases of old garden tools, gnomes (of course), early lawn mowers, seed measuring devices and Gertrude Jekyll’s writing desk. I almost genuflected.

A charming corner in the garden beside the museum. Wouldn't this be a lovely place to putter?
