Gardening with Native Plants in Ontario with Master Gardener Candace Dressler

January 18, 2022 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

The next meeting of the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society is on Tuesday, January 18th and will take place on Zoom at 7:00 pm.

Our guest speaker this month, Master Gardener Candace Dressler, will give her presentation “Gardening with Native Plants in Ontario.” Candace will discuss how different plants are native to different parts of the planet, giving examples of the different biomes on the planet as well as the ecoregions and districts in North America. She will present how to use plant nomenclature and plant tags to help determine if a plant is native to the Ottawa area, and finish her presentation with an overview of some of her favourite native plants.

Candace Dressler is a Master Gardener, member of the Gloucester Horticultural Society, and a past-Director for OHA District 1. She started gardening with her grandparents on the prairies over 30 years ago, and joined Master Gardeners in 2017. Candace has an English-inspired front garden and a woodland border in the back of her property. The introduction of more than 50 species of native plants to her garden has resulted in an increase of visiting birds as well as reduced plant maintenance. Candace, along with fellow Master Gardener Fran Dennett, consulted on the GHS’s native garden at Madonna Long Term Care.

Society members will be emailed the Zoom meeting invite. If you are not a member and would like to attend free as a one-time guest, or if you would like to become a member, please send an email to [email protected]. Annual membership is $15 per person or $25 per family.

Please join us for what is sure to be an inspiring evening.
